The history of astrometric observation of the minor planets is reviewed, with an emphasis on the activities of the Berlin Astronomisches Rechen-Institut in compiling data and computing ephemerides (from the 1870s until 1947). Consideration is also given to the work of successor organizations such as the Minor Planet Center and the Minor Planets and Comets group at the Institute for Theoretical Astronomy in Leningrad, the advantages of electronic transfer of ephemerides over printed books and circulars, and the problem of observational accuracy.
