The observing instruments, detectors, and applications characteristic of current ground-based astrometric observations are briefly reviewed, employing the basic categories developed in a detailed review by Kovalevsky (1984). Consideration is given to global astrometry (mainly computer analysis of catalogs at present), hemispheric astrometry (using transit circles or astrolabes as well as radio interferometers to produce data for a reference-system catalog), wide-field astrometry (using medium-speed and high-speed cameras), narrow-field astrometry (mainly for differential parallaxes, proper motions, and multiple-star orbital motions), and negligible-field astrometry (for relative positions, using speckle interferometry to increase resolution).
