The feasibility of a signal multiplexer able to operate in cryogenic (4 to 100 K) and radiation (20 kRad) environments, namely the cryostat vessel of the ISO mission, is shown. The proposed multiplexing option can be considered useful only if the overall analog multiplexing system significantly reduces the thermal input in the cryostat vessel. This occurs via 300 electrical interconnections which must be made from the electronic units located outside the cryostat to sensors and actuators inside the cryostat vessel. The feasability and efficiency of the multiplexer system is demonstrated. Based on a technology survey, three potential solutions can be retained: GaAs MESFET technology, silicon MOS technology, and silicon micromechanical membrane switches.
