The formation of a supernova is reviewed and historical supernovae are discussed. Attention is given to the study of supernova remnants which are the only means of studying the supernova which occurred before the era of modern telescope astronomy. Problems covered include the fact that too few supernovae seem to be found. The known number of remnants would require only one supernova every 150 years. However, it is reported that the number of pulsars in the galaxy implies a rate of one supernova about every 10 years. Attention is also given to the apparent lack of a shell structure in the Crab Nebula. Finally, plerions and their implications are covered.
