Scientific paper

The article describes the Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope, the techniques employed, and problems encountered in observing Saturn with the Pioneer II probe. Topics discussed include the preparation of the 24,000 spacecraft commands, analysis of data, and observation from a rotating spacecraft which meant that coverage was limited to 26 deg. Also covered are the fact that Pioneer commands take effect on receipt from earth after a delay of 1 hour 26 minutes, and the need to rewrite the command sequence due to a deviation of the spacecraft as it approached Saturn. Finally, attention is given to the images received from Pioneer II.
