The double quasar 0957 + 561 A, B is observed by high-resolution very long baseline interferometry (VBLI) in order to investigate the hypothesis that the double quasar is actually two images of the same object formed by a gravitational lens. Observations were made at 1666 MHz using the European Network at Effelsberg, Dwingeloo and Jodrell Bank for a total period of five hours. Two apparently unresolved radio sources (less than approximately 20 m arcsec) with comparable flux densities (44 and 32 mJy) were detected close to the optical quasars, consistent with the gravitational lens hypothesis. An upper limit of approximately 4 m arcsec to the size of the source is estimated, assuming the presence of a gravitational lens, and higher resolution observations are suggested in order to determine the structure of the two components and provide a stronger test of the gravitational lens hypothesis.
