On the basis of a few elementary assumptions, a general model of planetary systems is developed which is similar to that observed in the solar system. Starting with an axially symmetric rotating disk of dust and gas and the assumptions that a uniform process of planet formation proceeds by the capture of dust and all or part of the gas by planets in circular rings, one- and two-component processes of accretion are formulated. The effects of the free parameters of the models are examined and a least-squares test is used to obtain the best fit of the parameters to the total mass, total dust mass, number of planets and mass and orbit of the largest planet in the solar system. Results are shown to confirm the presence of a moderate mass depletion in the outer regions of the system during system formation.
