Scientific paper
Current information on the zodiacal light and the interplanetary dust grains which constitute its source is reviewed, and the prospects for its future investigation are discussed. Techniques for the observation of the 1- to 100-micron interplanetary cloud particles responsible for the zodiacal light are presented, including local sampling and impact studies and ground-based and spaceborne integral radiation studies. Results of these studies concerning the distributions of the luminance and polarization of the zodiacal light, its spectrum and variations are indicated, and the physical significance of these results for the distribution, density, phase function and evolution of the interplanetary dust particles is discussed. Missions currently planned for the further investigation of the zodiacal light include Venera 83, to be launched in 1983, the out-of-ecliptic probes to be launched towards Jupiter in the same year, and cometary rendezvous missions before 1990.
