The departure from Beer's law due to multiple scattering in a helium absorption cell is investigated. A complete description of the relevant scattering mechanisms, within the frame of a Monte Carlo simulation, is used to evaluate the effects of polarization, collisional line broadening and frequency redistribution. A cylindrical geometry is studied which includes optical reflection effects at the boundaries of the enclosure.
