When Cluster traveled outbound in the northern hemisphere or inbound in the southern hemisphere during northward IMF (Interplanetary Magnetic Field) conditions, it almost always observed an interface between the cusp and the magnetosheath which is clearly associated with sharp transitions of the magnetic field and plasma moments. Sometimes the energetic electrons, proton, helium and oxygen ions were observed and their intensity peaked right at this interface. However at other times there was no energetic particle intensity. Seven events with the energetic particle intensity peaks at this interface have been found based on 4 years of Cluster data. We try to figure out why the energetic particle fluxes peak at this interface for these events but not for others. Case studies for Mar 23, 2002 and Apr.23, 2002 indicates that the interface is a current sheet rather than a turbulent boundary layer. For the Mar. 23 event, the IMF Bz component was near zero and the By component dominated. The geometry of the magnetic field preferred antiparallel By reconnection. For the Apr. 23 event, the IMF Bz component was positive. The geometry of the magnetic field preferred high latitude Bz reconnection. During both events, Cluster observed bipolar signatures in the magnetic field which are consistent with Hall effects in the reconnection process. We will present evidence that indicates energetic particles can be trapped in the high latitude magnetopause current sheet.
