Pulsationally unstable envelopes of red giants are shown to have oscillatory properties which closely resemble Miras. The evolution of such models is followed to the point where oscillations diverge. Dynamical calculations show that beyond this point these stars lose mass and readily become planetary nebulae. Questions of statistics and the effect of nuclear shell flashes are discussed.
