Photometric observations in UBV of the typical Algol system XZ Sgr obtained at the European Southern Observatory are presented, and a photometric solution is given which includes gas stream effects. This solution, yielding about the same geometric properties as Knipe found in 1974, also shows remarkable differences between the two solutions. In particular, they concern the missing reflection between the components and unexplained systematic slopes in the differences between observed and calculated intensities in the solution of Knipe. The discussion of the present observations confirms the presence of circumstellar matter, which is also indicated by the contradiction between photometric and spectroscopic results concerning the eccentricity of the orbit. The gas stream causes a polar hot spot on the primary component and explains some of the observed distortions of the light curve. Complications in the U light curve may probably be explained in part by the extremely large inclination (88.5 deg) of the orbit.
