The paper presents a quantitative HR diagram for main sequence O and B stars and for later-type supergiants, using complete samples of stars extracted from various catalogs. Half the O stars have been considered to be evolved, old disk population objects on the basis of other recent studies and the present work. In addition, an Initial Mass Function (IMF) for the solar neighborhood is derived by combining the star counts with models of main sequence stellar evolution. Also, an approximation of the IMF per unit surface of the galactic disk is given. It is also shown that the observed surface density of supergiants of different spectral types and luminosity classes is consistent with the large mass-loss evolutionary models of Chiosi et al. (1978). Finally, an estimation is given of the surface luminosity and the colors of the galactic disk in the solar neighborhood, and it is shown that the properties of the solar neighborhood are comparable to the integrated properties of Sc galaxies.
