Spectra of the nucleus of the type I Seyfert galaxy ESO 113-IG 45=Fairall 9 at optical wavelengths reveal that the H gamma line has an FWOI of 12,400 km/s and an equivalent width of 26 A. The luminosity below the Lyman limit is calculated to be 1.4 x 10 to the 44th erg/s, similar to that for extreme type I Seyferts, such as IC 4329 A, I ZW 1 or II Zw 136, and ESO 113-IG 45 is comparable to them in terms of Balmer lines, flux in H gamma, variability, IR excess, color and redshift. The nucleus has the colors of a blue QSO and has brightened by 0.53 mag (approximately 60%) at UV wavelengths over the last year, but shows no variability (greater than 0.02 mag) on a timescale of a day. The extended source surrounding the nucleus has a radial surface brightness distribution at visual wavelengths over the range theta/D(0)=0.21-0.86 in good agreement with that seen in the bulge component of early-type spiral galaxies. Absolute visual magnitudes of -23.14 for the underlying galaxy and -23.72 for the central Seyfert nucleus are derived, while total magnitude is 13.84.
