We study the evolution of the radiation belt edge in the post-midnight sector during a pre-storm interval in January 2004, using multi-point Cluster observations. We present a case study where large electric fields of the order of 300 mV/m develop at the outer edge of the radiation belt. During the event the Cluster spacecraft fly on a string-of pearls formation on an out-bound pass. The radiation belt edge is crossed by the four Cluster satellites at L = 5.7 - 6.0 one by one within a few minutes while the edge is moving earthward at a speed of about 35 km/s. During the event the edge becomes steeper in terms of the gradient of energetic particle fluxes and at the same time electric fields grow from 50 mV/m to near 300 mV/m. In the region of large electric fields, the thermal plasma density becomes depleted because of fast ExB drifts that grow up to 400 km/s. Such large drifts also dominate the drift motion of trapped particles, can move them on another field lines and thus cause the steepening of the radiation belt edge. The large electric fields develop at the same time with an onset of a weak substorm.in a pre-midnight sector.
