Transient ion populations are observed to be trapped during magnetic storms and later detrapped during succeeding storms in the region just outside the quiet time ion belt. Previous studies have investigated mechanisms for the formation of the transient belts; here we examine magnetic field line curvature (FLC) as a possible mechanism for their detrapping. During magnetic storms the increased ring current and other current systems distort the magnetic field in the region of these belts causing increased curvature of the magnetic field lines. If the curvature becomes strong enough the magnetic moments of the particle gyro-orbits are not conserved and the particles diffuse in pitch angle until they are captured by the Earth's atmosphere. Using the Tsyganenko 2004 magnetic field model and the Young et al. [2002]\footnote{ Young, S. L., R. E. Denton, B. J. Anderson, and M. K. Hudson (2002), Empirical model for μ-scattering caused by field line curvature in a realistic magnetosphere, J. Geophys. Res., 107(A6), 1069, doi:10.1029/2000JA000294.} FLC pitch angle scattering model, which is valid for a range of magnetospheric conditions, we simulate the decay of the transient belt seen in CRRES PROTEL data during August 1990 and show that the simulated decay is consistent with the PROTEL data for a range of energies.
