The author compares three smoothing algorithms based on Whittaker's method: the original Whittaker's algorithm and the algorithms proposed by Yusupov (1968) and Vondrak (1969, 1977). The analysis reveals that all three algorithms produce resulting formulae which have the same structure and differ by a normalization factor of the arguments in the series being smoothed. A modification of Yusupov's method is proposed to provide consistency with other algorithms for equidistant arguments. The author discusses a possibility of improving frequency separation in Whittaker's filter by increasing the order of differences. He suggests formulae for determining the slope of frequency response and the smoothing parameter for a desired cutoff frequency.
