The conversion factor between 12CO integrated intensity and H2 column density, also known as "X factor", is investigated in the LMC. The knowledge of the X factor is necessary to derive an accurate gas-to-dust ratio and examine how gas-to-dust ratios vary with local and global environment (e.g., quiescent or star forming region, metallicity).
We use a relation between the sizes and masses of molecular clouds established in the Milky Way to derive the X factor XCO in the LMC. The values of XCO obtained with this method are consistent with average values derived in the literature. We then use the molecular content derived from the X factor and CO observations to establish a map of the gas-to-dust ratio in the LMC from Spitzer observations.
