The curious discrepancy in metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) between globular cluster systems and their host galaxies’ constituent stars has long demanded their highly decoupled evolutionary histories. A recent advance in attaining cluster metallicities, however, offers us an alternative perspective to resolve the observed disagreement. In particular, the new cluster MDFs inferred in this study are strikingly similar to those of observed field stars and those produced by galaxy chemical enrichment models. Our findings resolve the baffling discrepancies between MDFs of globular clusters and field stars, and suggest a new picture in which star clusters and their parent galaxies have co-evolved, sharing common origins and close evolutionary histories. The view is further supported by the age difference found here amongst cluster systems, which can be interpreted in the context of galaxy downsizing.
