Most of the old supernova remnant (SNR) population in the Milky Way have not been identified because of intrinsic faintness and background contamination in respect of both radio continuum and X-ray emission. However, old SNRs are expected to develop rapidly expanding HI shells, with the HI gas in these shells appearing faint, wing-like features extending to velocities beyond the limits allowed by Galactic rotation (Forbidden Velocity Wings; FVWs). FVW173.0+1.5 was originally identified in the Leiden/Dwingeloo HI survey data. We have carried out high resolution HI observations using the Arecibo 305-m radio telescope, and find a very well defined HI shell over a velocity range of +15 to +50 km/s. We also find that there is a faint continuum shell, which is spatially well correlated with the HI shell. The spectral index of the continuum shell has been determined to be 0.47 (+-0.12) which is typical for a shell-type SNR. Furthermore, there is optical and X-ray emission associated with the SNR. We discuss the physical properties of FVW173.0+1.5 at these wavelengths and consider the distance to the SNR in detail. There are several HII regions and star forming molecular clouds at the periphery of the SNR shell. We discuss the possibility that this may be a case of star formation triggered by a SNR.
