We present a model for the evolution of galaxy groups that investigates the contribution of gravitational heating to the global thermodynamics of the group. We seek to understand the energy deficit between real (heated) groups and our model groups in a quantitative way. Our sample consists of 5 groups of different masses, 1012 - 1014 solar masses, with a core radius of 10kpc, and a maximum radius of 500kpc. A nice feature about the structure of this model is that all parameters - radius, gas density, DM mass, core radius - can all be varied very easily for fine tuning results. Assuming hydrostatic equilibrium we solve the equation of HSE for T(r) to find the initial temperature of the IGM in groups immediately after formation. We calculate the cooling time for groups with these temperatures and find that groups of mass > 8x1013 solar masses have sufficiently high temperatures from gravitational heating and do not cool significantly over a Hubble time.
We also find that for groups of lower mass, a simple AGN energy injection model yields realistic results as compared with recent surveys of temperature and x-ray luminosity.
