Active galactic nuclei and starburst activity are known to be inextricably connected in observations of luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRGs). Multiwavelength datasets have provided many ways for identifying signatures of the two and rest-frame optical spectroscopic diagnostics are often used to study the relative contributions from each. Here we present the results of a multiwavelength study of a large sample of 70 micron selected galaxies from the COSMOS survey. We make use of the entire multiwavelength dataset, from the X-ray to the radio, to identify a large sample of AGN candidates and compare the selections using several different commonly used methods. We then compare these results to those using spectroscopic diagnostics for the subset of objects with rest-frame optical spectroscopy. These diagnostics work very well at low redshift (z<0.5) where the standard optical lines are still detectable by optical spectrographs but become more difficult at higher redshifts. We test several new spectroscopic methods that have been suggested for identifying AGN at higher redshifts.
