Many new observations of stratospheric nitrous oxide have become available since a CIRA reference model for this constituent was derived from Stratospheric and Mesospheric Sounder (SAMS) data. The data from instruments on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) are particularly useful as they provide increased resolution and spatial coverage compared to the SAMS data, and therefore offer the possibility of significant improvements in the reference model. These data are compared to the CIRA climatology to illustrate some of their chief characteristics. The UARS data are also be used to examine the limits of zonal mean reference models. Finally some comments are made about the possible form of a new model.
