On 637 occasions since 1988, precise times of sunset over the Pacific Ocean have been observed from a coastal site in central Chile (lat. 32.9º S.) at an elevation of approximately 120 meters. The original intent was to find if there was a connection between these times and the presence of the El Niño Oscillation event owing to the variation in atmospheric refraction that would be expected with a change in sea surface temperature. While no such effect was found, other phenomena were noted including the occurence of the green flash.
