We will present The Kepler Open Cluster Study, a program to measure stellar rotation periods and search for planets around select members of 4 open star clusters with ages from 0.5-10 Gyr. With measurements of unique duration, cadence, and precision, Kepler may detect the first transiting planet in an open cluster, and promise to open a new window to the angular momentum evolution of low-mass stars by measuring rotation periods for cluster stars with ages beyond that of the Hyades and of the Sun. Such Kepler results will help further develop a new technique (gyrochronology) to determine stellar ages from stellar rotation. This application alone has broad implications in general, and for the field of extra-solar planets and the Kepler mission in particular. In addition to the specifics of the program we will present a "first look" at Kepler light curves for late-type members of open clusters.
Kepler was selected as the 10th mission of the Discovery Program. Funding for this mission is provided by NASA, Science Mission Directorate.
