The impact of solar wind pressure discontinuities during predominantly northward IMF leads to a class of disturbances known as sudden impulses (SIs). Because the current system associated with SI events is relatively isolated, they are ideally suited for investigating the large-scale current systems that couple the magnetosphere-ionosphere system. The ground signature of these events includes induced magnetic and electric fields that are sufficiently large to drive geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) in technological systems located on the surface of the Earth. We investigate the induced fields from a model of the large-scale SI-induced current system for a variety of conditions and locations. Empirical relationships derived from a collection of these events can be used to predict the expected GIC level for a given SI event.
