Here we present Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS H-band images for the 88 most luminous (U)LIRGs in the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS), which combines multiwavelength imaging and spectroscopic data from space (Spitzer, HST, GALEX, and Chandra) and ground-based telescopes. High-resolution near-infrared observations are necessary to recover nuclear structure that is obscured by dust from view at optical wavelengths. We find that a large fraction of all galaxies in our sample possess double nuclei (41-54%) or show evidence for multiple nuclei, and an average IR-luminous lifetime of 0.5 Gyrs is estimated. Comparison with HST ACS B-band images suggests that half of these double nuclei are not visible at short wavelengths due to dust obscuration, placing strong limitations on the ability to detect the true nuclear structures of luminous infrared galaxies at high-redshift. Furthermore, fitting the near-infrared light distribution allows us to extract the structural stellar components of these merging galaxies. We will discuss the results of the HST near-infrared imaging, and their implication for bulge and associated SMBH growth in LIRGs.
