Understanding the dynamical processes that transfer energy between galaxies and their surroundings is key to building a consistent model for the evolution of galaxies, yet these processes remain poorly understood. Evidence for these processes is written in the density and temperature structure of the hot X-ray emitting gas in the galaxy and its environment.
We present results from combined Chandra observations (totalling 120ks) of NGC5846, a nearby (z=0.0057) dominant giant elliptical galaxy in the NGC5846 subgroup. The data show asymmetric X-ray emission, including bright knotty rims surrounding X-ray cavities adjacent to NGC5846's central source, candidate ghost cavities suggestive of previous nuclear activity, an elongated extended X-ray halo with a sharp surface brightness discontinuity (edge) to the northeast, and a trail of weak, diffuse emission to the northwest. We measure temperatures, abundances, densities and pressures in these features to constrain gas velocities and cooling times, explore models for their origin (e.g. sloshing, turbulence, AGN outbursts) and probe how, together, these processes may transfer energy to the ambient group gas.
