Launched in May 2009, the Planck satellite is currently mapping the sky in 9 frequency bands from 30 to 857 GHz. At IPAC, a major task is to compile a list of sources (the Early Release Compact Source Catalog) detected in the Planck maps. These sources will greatly contribute to the goal of accurately determining the CMB power spectrum up to l 2000 when correctly removed from the maps, and will also be unique in studying extragalactic sources in the sub-mm wavelengths since Planck is the only all-sky survey in this previously unexplored frequency regime.
Among the Planck HFI bands (at six frequencies above 100 GHz) which all have < 10' beam sizes, the sensitivity to source detections declines as the frequency declines not only because thermal dust emission declines, but also because the CMB fluctuations become stronger toward the spectral peak of the CMB. In fact, CMB noise dominates at Planck 100 GHz, 143 GHz and 217 GHz bands and is 7, 4, and 3 times the instrument noise, respectively. To enhance the sensitivity of ERCSC, we have developed a method to extract CMB map from the linear combination of all-sky maps at different frequency and subtract the CMB map from the all-sky maps prior to running the source detection pipeline. We have tested this method on the full focal plane simulations from the Planck Sky Model. Results of our test along with the discussion of the effectiveness of this CMB cleaning method will be presented in this meeting.
