NASA's planned return to the Moon opens many possibilities for astrophysics. I will review the benefits and challenges of a wide range of investigations enabled by lunar exploration and its infrastructure. These include fundamental gravitational physics (with laser retroreflectors), long wavelength radio observations, interferometric imaging, telescopes at all wavelengths, spinning liquid parabolic mirrors, studies of extra-solar planets, cosmic rays, and more. Ideally, the lunar infrastructure would enable advanced observatories of many types, but they will have to compete with other ways to achieve similar objectives, since the free lunch has not yet been developed. Valuable features of the infrastructure could include heavy lift vehicles, advanced robotic capabilities, and human servicing or assembly of complex equipment.
