Recently, we developed a new method to determine earthquake magnitudes using duration of high-frequency energy radiation and maximum displacement amplitudes of first arriving P-waves (Hara, 2006, submitted to Earth Planets Space). We showed that it is possible to determine magnitudes consistent with moment magnitudes in the Harvard CMT catalog. In the present study, we apply this method to the July 17, 2006 Java earthquake. The estimated duration is 155.6 sec, which is consistent with other observations such as the centroid time shift (69.1 sec) of the Harvard CMT solution. The estimated magnitude is 7.7, which well agrees with Mw of the Harvard CMT solution (7.7). We also apply our method to the 1992 Nicaragua, 1994 Java, and 1996 Peru tsunami earthquakes. The preliminary magnitude estimates for these earthquakes are 7.6, 7.8, and 7.4, respectively, which are consistent with Mw in the Harvard CMT catalog. These results suggest that our method is applicable to rapid determination of earthquake magnitudes including tsunami earthquakes, since it is possible to determine magnitudes by processing of first arriving P-waves.
