We have obtained multi-object spectroscopy of 850 point sources using the UK Schmidt Telescope and 6dF spectrograph. We selected all blue objects and all objects redder than the main sequence, using SDSS photometry inside 17 fields in the SDSS equatorial stripe observations, in order to find candidate post-common-envelope binary stars. We use these observations to assess the completeness of published catalogues of white dwarfs, white dwarf plus main sequence binaries and quasars. We find that the current population of white dwarf plus main sequence binaries is poorly sampled and that a large number of quasars exist which have not been targeted by the SDSS, in disagreement with the published completeness assessments of the SDSS quasar dataset.
