We show the results of recent efforts to determine the nature of the donor stars in ultra-compact AM CVn binaries, with the goal of constraining their evolutionary history. We find that the systems in general appear to have hot, massive, semi-degenerate donor stars rather than cool, degenerate ones. We discuss the implications for the formation of AM CVn stars, and for their gravitational-wave signals in future space-borne detectors such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).
