MER-Opportunity spent over 200 sols within and around Endurance, a polygonal impact crater measuring 150m across. Endurance was formed in a densely fractured target made up of flat-lying layered deposits, where multiple layer-parallel horizons have been highlighted by diagenetic coloration. Layering exposed in the rim walls exhibits complex structures that can be understood using the standard model of rim cross-sections where the normally-assumed radial symmetry is broken. To this end, we have measured the orientations of bedding planes throughout Opportunity's traverse along the crater wall. We have used these measurements, along with abundant Pancam imagery and a DTM generated from three panoramas taken within and around the crater, to construct and test a simple 3D mathematical description of the uplifted layering and flap configuration. In addition to illuminating the structure of a markedly polygonal impact crater, this study aims to develop tools that can be used to assist rover-based exploration of simple crater rims on Mars and elsewhere, to accurately reconstruct the pre-impact stratigraphy, and to estimate the extent of crater degradation. We also present crater shape statistics gathered from MOC images of Meridiani and other polygonal crater fields that may illuminate the relationship between fractures in target materials and the polygonal shape of crater outlines.
