We present an analysis of the time-variable continuum spectrum of the blazar 3C 279 based on an extensive quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength data set. The data have been compiled from observations with Fermi, RXTE, the VLBA, and various ground-based optical telescopes starting in August 2008. We form the dynamic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 3C 279 and analyze their evolution over time. We use a time-dependent radiation transfer model in the internal shock scenario to shed light on the interplay between the synchrotron and inverse Compton radiation processes responsible for producing the resultant SEDs.
