The author discusses the reasons leading to a particular choice of the dome system, mainly consisting in a box drifting on rails. The movement of the structure is remotely controlled. The wide opening and a good thermal insulation enable the instrumentation to quickly reach the ambient temperature at the beginning of the night, at the same time preserving it from excessively rapid temperature variations.
