The SMA has provided many important contributions to extragalactic
work - from nearby galaxies to high-z merging systems of extreme luminosity. I will present and discuss a few examples of this exciting science including imaging of CO 6-5, HCN, HCO+ and HNC towards the ultraluminous galaxy Arp220 - and show how these observations have helped unveil the extreme physical and chemical conditions in the compact nuclei.
It is also important to study the gas and dust properties of more nearby, objects where finer details can be studied. One example is the detection of high-velocity gas and twin gas peaks in the double nucleus of the starburst merger NGC 3256, or the images of the CO 2-1 emission in the central 1 kpc of Cen A, the closest radio galaxy. This shows that we can resolve molecular gas in nearby galaxies at, or below, the size scale of individual giant molecular clouds.
Moving out in redshift, with the SMA (combined with Spitzer Space Telescope observations) it was first discovered that the multi-wavelength counterparts of radio-dim submm galaxies provided evidence for a significant population of SMGs at higher redshift (z > 3) than the radio-selected sample. The structure of the molecular and dust emission of the SMGs are now being unveiled by the SMA which is essential for the understanding of the physical properties of this important population of extreme star-forming galaxies
