Extragalactic submillimetre (submm) surveys have revealed a population of dusty high redshift galaxies that appear similar to nearby ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). However, at high redshift we observe these galaxies at a time when they are thousands of times more numerous than such galaxies today. While other high redshift ULIRGs are being found to look more like simple disk galaxies, I will present the growing body of evidence that submm selected galaxies are more likely to be associated with major mergers. Our understanding of the morphologies of submm galaxies is currently limited to the small samples that are bright enough in the deepest optical and near-IR images; significant advances will be made in the near future with HST/WFC3.
