A new technique of differential orbit improvement is described in which we do not use the residuals in right ascension and declination directly, but rotate them to obtain two other components. One of the components does not contain the timing error of the observations and the effect of irregular changes in air drag to the first order; the other does contain these effects to the largest possible extent. Important applications of the method include the correction of station coordinates and the determination of tesseral harmonics in the gravitational potential of the earth. Special attention is paid to the case of small eccentricities.
