An overview of the history of gamma-ray astronomy is given starting with
predictions in the 1950s and first detections in the 1960s. Tremendous
efforts have been made since then, with exciting discoveries, which
finally culminated in the ``Golden Age'' of gamma-ray astronomy which we
are presently experiencing.
