The properties of Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars are generally interpreted assuming that both classes of objects are magnetars: isolated neutron stars powered by the decay of extremely high magnetic fields. After summarizing the observations that provide the evidence for magnetic fields of ~1014-1015 G in these objects, I present their main timing and spectral properties, focussing on the most recent results, and briefly discuss the scenarios for their formation.
