Radio hotspots in extragalactic relativistic jets occur in regions where the jet interacts with the surrounding environment, such as the intergalactic medium (in the case of terminal interactions) or extranuclear clouds within the host galaxy (jet/cloud interactions). Measuring the radio properties of these hotspots (viz. size, shape, brightness, luminosity, spectra) is of fundamental importance to constrain models of their X-ray emission mechanisms. VLBI-scale observations are necessary for accurate measurements because of the compact nature of the hotspots. We propose to observe a sample of radio galaxies which possess bright, compact hotspots in wide-field imaging mode with the LBA in order to measure their radio properties and hence improve our understanding of their X-ray emission mechanisms, and also to further our pioneering work on the techniques of wide-field VLBI imaging.
