Cyanodiaceteylene (HC5N) is a fragile carbon-chain molecule that has been commonly found in cold, pre-stellar cores associated with low mass star formation. It is not expected to survive for long as the core heats up, once a star has begun forming inside it. It therefore came as a surprise to discover a correlation between HC5N and CH3CN emission in a trial study of HC5N using the Tidbinbilla 34m to examine several hot molecular cores, sources associated with the early stage of massive star formation, a stage in which HC5N is not expected to survive. However, before we can draw any firm conclusions about HC5N's utility as a tracer of early star formation activity we need to extend this result, to include the complete sample of hot molecular cores from which the trial observations were drawn. We will thus search for 31.95 GHz HC5N emission in an additional sample of 59 hot molecular cores.
