By the next decade, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is expected to visit the whole sky once every three days and generate astronomical catalogs as large as 0.3 PB annually. The catalog data will be stored in a database management system
with specialized spatial indexing to facilitate data organization and query access. The ability to carry out large scale cross-matches efficiently will be critical for data processing and access. In this paper we present a technique for fast spatial cross-matching and how we have used it to simulate one of the most challenging LSST tasks: triggering alerts within 30 s after a detection happens.
