The Helix Nebula's central star, a hot white dwarf (WD), exhibits hard X-rays and strong mid-IR emission that are not expected from its photosphere. An external cause is required, but no direct evidence for a binary companion exists at optical and near-IR wavelengths. It is not clear whether the hard X-ray and mid-IR emissions are related. From our Spitzer Space Telescope 24 micron survey of hot WDs, we found excess mid-IR emission from WD 0127+581 in the planetary nebula (PN) Sh2-188 and the central star of PN K1-22. We request XMM-Newton observations of these two WDs to establish the relationship between hard X-ray emission and mid-IR excess, and to determine whether they are associated with Kuiper Belt-like objects or common-envelope binary evolution.
