In a pioneering balloon experiment 1912 Victor Hess discovered cosmic rays. Over the soon 100 years since that time enormous progress in fundamental physics, astrophysics and cosmology has been made with balloon experiments. New elementary particles were discovered in the period from 1930 to 1950. Later balloon experiments searched for primordial antimatter. Supernova properties have been studied in balloon borne experiments measuring radioactive nuclei. Cosmology is today very much an experimental science with many experiments giving new data. One of the most important discoveries was the observation of the first acoustic peak in the cosmic microwave background in balloon technique of today makes experiments with very long duration possible and opens new science windows.
