An open type OH fluorescence hygrometer has been developed capable of measuring in sunlit conditions. The instrument utilises the 1-0 vibrational band of the OH* (A2Σ+) fluorescence, in the spectral region where scattered solar background illumination is drastically reduced by atmospheric ozone. A test flight confirmed sufficient background suppression with the sun elevation up to 15° above horizon and adequate sensitivity. This ability along with a compact and fully self-contained design allows flexible use of the hygrometer in many balloon and aircraft experiments. Results obtained within the SKERRIES program demonstrate the tight connection between the water distribution and the dynamical situation near the tropopause.
