The use of conventional methods for the study of Algol-stars and also an employment of computer-aided procedures of recent origin provide satisfactory results only if the light curves do not contain any complex particularities. Such particularities can be related to brightness changes produced in connection with the presence of circumstellar matter in the binary system. The circumstellar matter represents material which belongs to neither of the two system components. Spectroscopic and photometric studies indicate that circumstellar matter is contained in a considerable number of eclipsing binaries. Attention is given to aspects of stellar mass transfer and mass loss, the characteristics of typical Algol systems, the effect of gaseous flows on the light curves, rectification problems, the case of the U Cephei, and the ring system RX Geminorum.
