We have analyzed in a strictly homogeneous way all the archival data obtained from the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) onboard Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) for the BL Lacertae (BL Lac) object Mrk 421 (z=0.031). The data set covers 9 years (1996-2005) and it is comprised of 1.4 Msec of good quality data with 16 sec time resolution. In order to probe into the time properties of the emission mechanism we perform higher order time series analysis to the data set. We find a strong indication of genuine non-stationarity in the radiation process revealing two variability states of the source.
