Data from the high gain long period seismograph stations were studied. Love and Rayleigh surface waves containing components of more than 300 seconds per period were observed. These data were analyzed to verify regional surface wave dispersion determined from great circle analyses, and the differences in earth structure between oceans and continents at depths below 400 km. Surface waves were analyzed using the multiple filter technique, and phase velocities of surface waves traveling between two stations over a purely oceanic or continental path were determined. Phase velocities calculated had unreasonable values compared to known ranges of surface wave phase velocity. Distortions of phase spectra due to interference, and to poor control of the system phase response are the cause of irregular phase velocities.
